On Resumes

Working on my resume has been taking up most of my free time lately. It's not that I'm looking for a new job, but it's the simple task of staying up to date. Plus, where I work, a new CEO just started. I bet she doesn't know what I can do or anything about me. A resume is a great way to say, "hey, here's everything I can do even if I don't do this already for you."

But the question is, what do you leave on or off your resume? There are a million articles on the subject, from how far do you list a past job to what do you write about yourself, and, since we live the social media days, do you use a photo or not? (If you put a photo on your resume they get to see the one you provide first and not the one that's on Facebook, is the argument).

I'm not sure. It's all pretty subjective, and everyone seems to have an opinion on the matter. Some companies look at it one way and another company can look at completely differently. It's amazing that some places even use computers to search for specific keywords.

The ultimate trick? Make it YOU. Make it look like YOU, make it sound like YOU. If it's not YOU, then they don't know whether you'll ultimately be a good fit because they don't know anything about you.

I can tell you now that I don't believe in spending hours upon hours at a job you hate. If you hate it or don't have any way to grow in your position, take a leap and quit! (Yes, easier said than done).

There's nothing like wasting time where you don't get to do what you love every single day. The key is to find a job where you get to be YOU every single day. It makes the days go by so much faster when you're doing something that you love and you can use that energy towards something amazing for the benefit of your company.

BE YOU.

Tuesday Topics: Eight Goals for the Month

Eeeek! I admit, I'm not a good goal setter. I freak out and worry about not finishing things all the time- because of the freak outs it never gets done the way it should be. I've given up because maybe my goals aren't realistic in the first place. But here's goes nothing. . . let's see if I can create eight realistic goals.

There's my eight goals for the month! Now you better hold me to them! I'll have to make sure I follow through.

What are some of your goals? Can you believe we're already half way through the year? I sure can't!

xoxo

P.S. Other pretty goals when I was too lazy to actually set my own.

Pretty Goals

Lately, I have not been motivated to set many goals for this year. I've been seeing these goals all decorated up on Ruche and they are too cute not to share. The nice thing about this is, they're all things that I want to do this year!

It has started making me feel motivated to start making my own goals. Yep, I know I'm a procrastinator. But better late than never! Did you make New Year's Resolutions? What keeps you motivated?

5 for Five

The recap:

I'm almost all organized again! Just a little bit more to go and having a long weekend definitely helps!

I plan on doing a post about everything that's been happening. It'll be coming Monday of next week. Pure, open, honest-- I hope I don't offend anyone.

Um, the car needs to go on this week's list (again!). It isn't a high priority because it's just looks and not how it runs.

I'm really starting to get in the holiday mood. I've decided I'm going to adopt a family and give them Christmas this year. Serving others is what I do best!

Hmm. . . wake up early and not stay up so late-- try again on that one!

This week's goals:

(Ehem, let's start with the repeats)

1. Okay, officially getting the car fixed and cleaning it out this weekend!

2. Wake up earlier and not stay up so late (no more baggy eyes).

3. Eat as much turkey as possible! Seriously, I'm starting to get to the scary underweight point again. Time to fill up!

4. To be in moment and spend every possible minute with those I love.

5. Call all of the family!

Ha, not too bad right? So thankful for everyone in my life! It hasn't been easy this year but I promise I'm starting to get better.

Where has the week gone???

Let's recap:

Chocolate is a good thing along with my gym pass. I go and workout, come home and eat chocolate (formerly known as Halloween candy). Happy Lis.

I'm getting a little better about talking at work. I still be really quiet when I'm working hard, which shouldn't be bad right?

It helps that Thanksgiving is coming up. I love holidays that help put our thoughts in perspective. Things could be better but then again, they could always get worse. I am blessed.

Sigh, the car is going on my list this week (again)!

New goals:

1. Organize, organize, organize. Everything is so messy right now! I can't find where I put things and am starting to forget things. It is chaos.

2. To not be afraid to talk about what I'm going through. I think more people would understand why I have a hard time opening up or why I'm quiet, if only they knew.

3. Okay, officially getting the car fixed and cleaning it out this weekend!

4. Get excited for the holidays. Sometimes I get excited and sometimes I get really sad. I just need to stick with the excited part.

5. Wake up earlier and not stay up so late. But really, I wish there were more hours in the day!

I need to learn how to make more time! What are your goals for the week?

5 for Five

Can I repeat last week's goals? I think I need to try again.

Let's see. . . a hurricane, time change, school projects, the list is never ending!

One thing that did happen, I got a pass to a nearby gym and went for the first time this week. My goal by going the gym: simply get back into shape. Working out for me has never been about losing weight or being toned. It's all about being healthy and I am a slow runner.

As far as the fall boots, I keep getting compliments on my old ones. I love them even though they're all battered up and have a quite the rustic look. I haven't found a good replacement yet so I'm keep on wearing the old ones. I do have my eye on these, which I may or may not need.

Now to redo last week's goals and add a few more . . .

pinned via Tonya

From last week:

1. Stay positive: This was really hard for me to do. More chocolate please.

2. Stand up more: I need to remember that my voice counts.

3. Be in the moment: I read this really great blog post about being present. I catch myself saying, "Things will be better when. . ." I need to enjoy right now. Despite all my challenges, I am blessed.

New for this week:

4. Clean out my car and get it fixed. Poor car has a cracked windshield and two hubcaps missing from driving it all over the country. It's time to get it in shape too!

5. Use that gym pass of mine at least three times this week. I about died after my first time back in (that's how out of shape I am, sigh)!

5 for Five

I'm quite the slacker. . . I didn't follow-up or create new goals last week! That's how crazy things have been around here. I'm working on that though since because of Sandy, I have the day off.

Here's my follow-up: I'm caught up on laundry. What the what?!? Yes, I'm caught up on laundry. My sweet aunt over the weekend handed me clean clothes and took me shopping. It was oh so sweet of her!

Ugh, looking for a job still continues. In the meantime, I have been crazy busy with my internships and school started up again. Good things will come for working so hard! (Keeping my fingers crossed).

Plane ticket bought and plans to go home for Christmas are set! I can't wait!

I'm a slacker when it comes to mailing anything. I would stop by the Post Office today, but I think they're closed because of the storm. Tomorrow, yes it needs to happen tomorrow.

Having the day off means I had time to create a schedule! Are you a blogger? If so, you may LOVE this blog calendar as much as I do! It's nice having a day to catch up!

Here's my goals for the week:

1. Workout: I really need to start working out again. Not to lose weight but to simply stay in shape. When I take weekend trips to NYC, I definitely can feel how out of shape I am with all the walking I try to do.

2. Stay positive: This was really hard for me to do last week. I broke down a couple of days in row. Not good. Scheduling me time and eating chocolate is a good thing.

3. Stand up more: I found myself being really quiet during a couple of meetings last week at my internships. Again, not good because they want my opinion and won't know that I can do more if I don't say anything. A couple of times, they've been shocked that I could solve their issue in minutes. Need to do more of that.

4. Winter boots: I am on a mission to make sure my feet stay warm. I have had the hardest time finding cute comfortable boots that fit my tiny feet. (Plus, I'm picky). I need to get some before it snows!

5. Be in the moment: I read this really great blog post about being present. I catch myself saying, "Things will be better when. . ." I need to enjoy right now. Despite all my challenges, I am blessed.

5 for Five

from Leah Millet Photography
It has been difficult to stay organized lately. I attribute that to moving to the other side of the country, having two internships and next week, school will start again for me. Before all that happens, I'm definitely going to need all the help I can get without getting too overwhelmed.

Thank goodness for sweet Jenn from Party of One to help keep me straight! She has started a link-up for writing down five goals for five days.

If I write it down and share it on the blog, I have to be committed, right? Here we go!

1. Laundry. Does it ever get out of control for you too? Mine is never-ending and keeps piling up.

2. Apply for at least two jobs a day. It's not that I don't have the skills or the internships to back me up, it's a matter of staying motivated.

3. Buy a plane ticket to go home for Christmas. Time is going by fast and I need to get it before prices go up!

4. Send off happy mail to Kim from The K.O. Jewelry. We are fall swap partners and I can't wait to see what she came up with! Our theme is weather, since it's our favorite thing about fall.

5. Come up with a more solid schedule. I hate the feeling of being late or behind. Right now, I can barely keep my head on straight on which days I'm supposed to be where. Time to plan!

Alright, you better help hold me to my five! :) What are your goals for the week?

Embrace the Camera

This year I wanted to make real goals and ones that I would remember.
After such a difficult year, I want to have goals of hope that will not
only benefit me, but help those around me as well.

The hardest thing I've had to learn,
is that I have to take care of me first and then help everyone else.
First and foremost, I need to be a better wife. We had a bump, a
hiccup and I'm committed to making our marriage strong. With
that being said, the goal is to make sure we have lots of quality time
without spending lots of money.

This is the year we need to start eating healthier.
More lean meats, more vegetables, less processed food.

Exercise. I hope that we can run a half marathon together.
Since we live in Arizona, we need to walk outside more.
Especially, while it's not too hot.

Savings. I have never kept a solid savings account.
Ugh, typing that makes me cringe. In the world of
economic unrest, we need a savings, emergency plan.

Both of us agree, that it's time to start a family.
It's a hope of ours that infertility will not be our friend.

Most importantly, I want to just "be there."
Meaning, be there for family and friends.
Be there for those important moments, have quality time and conversations.

It's also time to let go of being shy and say hello.
Again, just being there even if there's not a special invitation.

Then not to forget, never stop loving.

Here's to a wonderful 2012!

I may be a little late in joining this group

I'll admit I'm somewhat of a procrastinator.
Which isn't good. But as most journalists and comm students,
I work well under pressure.

Which is why I was happy to find that other bloggers
were committed to doing 12 goals by 2012.

My goals are much smaller compared to others.
It's just been that type of year.
However, they're still important to me.

What do you hope to accomplish by New Year's?

Here's my list.

Conference Weekend

I would guess that Lisa will put her own post on here about conference, but I'll go ahead and put in my two cents. Life has definitely had its challenges and stresses the last several months, as many of you know. This conference was a good chance for me to slow down a bit and try to put things back into perspective. At the risk of sounding cliche, I will say that some of the talks were exactly what I needed to hear right now. I am sure that almost anyone who listened to conference could say the same. As always, the talks were memorable and inspiring, and I already have a list of talks that I want to go back to and listen to again.

Just like the New Year, conference weekend is a great time to stop, reflect, refocus and set some goals. Now that the conference is over, the challenge is getting those goals to last longer than the proverbial week-long New Year's resolutions. If anyone has thoughts on applying and forming habits on the good intentions from conference weekend, feel free to share.
